Go Surfer Chic | Summer House

Inspired by warmer months at The Surf Lodge Montauk, I styled “Summer House”, a residence decorated with the forever-young beach-goer and collector in mind.

3 decorating tips to create the vibe in your home

  1. Mix in beach-feeling pieces like driftwood or coral. Here I went in a slightly different direction with vintage weathered antlers but it still evokes the same feel and its a little less expected.
  2. Use vintage hangers. Sounds like a minor detail but let me tell you, the right vintage hangers are things of beauty. The 30s  hangers featured here are of solid wood with beautiful curvature making them design elements in themselves.
  3. Try natural floor coverings like jute or sisal rugs. Their natural appearance echoes that of a beach landscape, plus they’re extremely practical.

Fold Away | Space Saving Furniture

The Flip-Over Table!

A table constructed from solid knotty pine and painted steel, it can be used two ways: with the seat back upright or as a bench by folding it down. We think it’s great indoors or out — if indoors, extra holiday or hallway seating. To boot, it folds up entirely to easily stow away.

Such a table might not be easy to find but they’re certainly out there and when we happened upon it it was love at first sight. It sold to a lucky Newport Beach resident in one of our online sales. 5 Steps To Coastal Chic Living

Dreaming of the beach? Create a coastal feel with simple elements that subtly evoke the laid-back mood of a chic beach cottage.

Coastal Chic Decor

  • Add vintage wood. Here I pulled in rich brown tones in the teak family for frames as well as the chair.
  • Incorporate stand alone frames. Empty frames are great for a minimalist feel and even better for layering!
  • Keep your blues green.  A soft seafoam or blue-green creates a calming feel. A color we associate with relaxing on a day at the shore.
  • Use a  patterned rug or dhurrie. Here a  graphic pattern reads more casual and contemporary and less traditional and serious.
  • Look for linen. Work linen into lamp shades, drapery or cushions for a relaxed appeal.

Great Expectations | A Retail Store at Citypoint

My Retail Store in Brooklyn

Out of an affinity for the Dickens novel and it’s imagery, Pip & Estella was born. Sana searched city to city to find a work of art for the Pip & Estella retail store that would capture the essence of the brand and compliment the store’s merchandising. In rural Massachusetts, what a beauty she found – an 1859 Cook painting, worn and weathered to perfection – her “Miss Havisham”.

Retail Decorating Tips

Whether you’re decorating your shop, trade show space or even a flea market or fair stall, consider the story you want to tell. Here, of course, Great Expectation led the theme with antique elements and worn finishes but what story should your brand tell?

  1. Create mood. A signature scented candle, or flowers to accent your brand colors help create a memorable experience for your customers.
  2. Choose wall colors wisely. While making an impression is important, sometimes simplicity makes the the biggest visual impact. Allow room for your products to shine.
  3. Make it comfortable. If you’re selling anything related to the home, why not make it feel like home? That goes for furniture, housewares, apparel and jewelry. We use these objects in our daily lives and associate them with…yes you guessed it – home.
